Makeup & SPF

This post is for my ladies who are looking to stay protected from the sun all while bringing your A game to your instagram to showcase those long awaited summer adventures. Summer means more time in the sun and more time in the sun means sun damage. Sun damage means burns, skin discoloration, premature aging, and unfortunately increased risk for skin cancers. One of the absolute best ways for prevention is through the use of Sun Protectant Factor, also known as SPF.

If you’re like me, you can totally relate to regrets of not having properly used sunscreen sooner in your early to mid 20s. Although collecting sunspots felt like a reward for a day well spent tanning, I finally learned my lesson when the Cabo sun had left me with raw blistering skin, especially bringing some unwanted attention. That burn in particular had left me closely examining the sun damage I had accumulated within the last few years. Ironically, I had re-started my topical tretinoin at the time which also played a role in this unpleasant experience. Pharmacist pearl here - many medications, OTC or RX, can cause what’s known as photosensitivity where the skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight. Different classes of medications can effect the skin in different ways when exposed to the sun. (We’ll have this topic linked soon enough.)

As I’ve been revamping my makeup drawer to get ready for some fun in the sun this summer, I’ve been looking for makeup products I can use during the day on occasions where I know I’ll be spending an extensive amount outside exposed to the sun. I’ve come across makeup lines that have formulated SPF into different cosmetic products ranging from concealers to blushes, bronzer, setting spray and much more. It’s important to note, it is HIGHLY recommended that you still wear your sunscreen under your makeup as the makeup itself only acts as an additional coverage to your base layer. Here are my top five recommended products for this summer:

1 —

Charlotte Tilbury SPF 50 Invisible UV Flawless Primer

Once you’ve applied your sunscreen, application of your primer should come next to help create a smooth canvas for easier application of your makeup onto your skin. In addition, primer will also allow for your makeup to last longer throughout the day. This highly rated product is where skin care meets makeup as this SPF primer is infused with hyaluronic acid allowing for a boost in collagen production, increase in hydration, and a skin plumping effect.

2 —

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Skincare

ILIA’s serum skin tint is the perfect alternative to wearing a full coverage foundation on days you are particularly looking for light coverage whether it be for work, running errands, vacation, and so on. This tint comes in 30 beautiful shades, formulated with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, plant based squalene, and non-nano zinc oxide.

3 —

Supergoop! 100% Mineral (Re)setting Powder SPF 35

Setting powder is essential in locking in makeup and controlling oil and shine, especially your concealer and foundation. This product is essential in being able reapply SPF over makeup multiple times throughout the day while under the sun. Supergoop! is a fully vegan cruelty free line full of SPF products, including more makeup based SPF totally worth checking out.

Paula’s Choice Anti-aging Lipgloss SPF 40

This light pink sheer gloss will help protect your lips from getting chapped and sunburned while giving a fuller more supple appearance. It pairs well with your preferred lippies, especially lip liner.
